[R1] HP Client Automation / Accelerite Endpoint Management Core Server HPCA Management Agent (nvdkit.exe) Cleartext Credentials MiTM Disclosure

Low

Synopsis

The HP Client Automation / Accelerite Endpoint Management 9.00 core server is a central management server that sends user credentials in cleartext during agent deployment, to remote agents listening via the HPCA Management Agent (nvdkit.exe), running on TCP port 3463. This may allow an attacker with privileged network position (e.g. man-in-the-middle) to gain access to the credentials, which may be administrative and offer full access to the agent host.

Note that 9.00 is not the latest version, but subsequent releases from Accelerite are not available for trial use. Since only the version from HP's site was tested, this is being reported to HP. Based on ZDI-15-364's timeline, our own attempts to contact the vendor, and this being a low-risk issue, Tenable is opting to disclose the issue.

Due to extensive delays in obtaining CVE assignments, Tenable is assigning our own CVE ID that we feel will not conflict with any current assignments or CNA pools. This will assist researchers and vendors in referencing this vulnerability should they work with the named vendor, or other vendors impacted by the issue. Until CVE resolves the delays in assignment, which is currently being discussed by MITRE and the CVE Editorial Board, Tenable will self-assign CVE IDs in the range of CVE-YEAR-82000 through CVE-YEAR-82999. These can be added to the master CVE database trivially, as seen by CVE-2014-999999 This is being done primarily so that we continue to be CVE-Compatible.

Solution

HP has removed their version of the software from the website, as they no longer own the product. Customers are encouraged to contact Accelerite for an updated version and to ask them if the issue has been resolved.
