Cross-site Scripting via WHOIS and DNS records on multiple lookup platforms

Synopsis

Multiple internet record lookup tools were found to be vulnerable to cross-site scripting attacks via malicious DNS or WHOIS records. By inserting malicious javascript into a DNS TXT record or the registrant field of a WHOIS record, the following sites were found to be vulnerable to XSS attacks, allowing an attacker to run arbitrary code in the context of a victims browser if these records were attempted to be viewed:

August 25, 2020 - Tenable attempts to obtain contact details for all 4 affected sites.
September 2, 2020 - Tenable attempts to obtain contact details for all 4 affected sites.
September 14, 2020 - Tenable attempts to obtain contact details for all 4 affected sites.
October 9, 2020 - Tenable discloses to CERT.
