Amazon Linux AMI : kernel (ALAS-2016-757) (Dirty COW)

high Nessus Plugin ID 94182

Synopsis

The remote Amazon Linux AMI host is missing a security update.

Description

A race condition was found in the way the Linux kernel's memory subsystem handled the copy-on-write (COW) breakage of private read-only memory mappings. An unprivileged local user could use this flaw to gain write access to otherwise read-only memory mappings and thus increase their privileges on the system.

(Updated 2016-11-10: This advisory was upgraded to Critical.)

Solution

Run 'yum update kernel' to update your system. You will need to reboot your system in order for the new kernel to be running.
