Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 12.10 / 13.10 : libyaml regression (USN-2098-2)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 72502

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security-related patch.

Description

USN-2098-1 fixed a vulnerability in LibYAML. The security fix used introduced a regression that caused parsing failures for certain valid YAML files. This update fixes the problem.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Florian Weimer discovered that LibYAML incorrectly handled certain large yaml documents. An attacker could use this issue to cause LibYAML to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code.

Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.

Solution

Update the affected libyaml-0-2 package.
